Pearson Language Tests is a unit of the Pearson PLC group, dedicated to assessing and validating the English language usage of non-native English speakers. The tests include the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, PTE General (formerly known as London Tests of English) and PTE Young Learners. The world's largest examining body.

In 2009, Pearson Language Tests launched the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) (Ref.) which is endorsed by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the organization responsible for the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). The test score has been aligned to the levels defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). PTE Academic is delivered through the Pearson Virtual User Environment (VUE) centers which are also responsible for delivering the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) worldwide.

Upon release, it was recognized by nearly 6,000 organizations. For instance, the test is approved for use by the Australia Border Agency and the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship for visa applications. PTE-A is also acceptable for the United Kingdom and New Zealand visa applications.[7] The test is predominantly read by a computer rather than a human grader to reduce waiting times of the results for students.

About the Test

To complete a PTE Academic test, you will need to attend a secure Pearson test center. You will use a computer and headset to listen to, read and respond to questions.

During the three-hour test session, there are three main parts to the test: speaking and writing (together), listening and reading. There is also an optional 10-minute break between the reading and listening parts. During the test, you will find twenty different question formats, ranging from multiple choice through to essay writing and interpreting information.

PTE Academic assesses real-life, academic English, so you will hear excerpts from lectures and view graphs and charts. You will hear a range of accents in the test, from British and American to non-native speakers, so you will be exposed to the type of accents you will encounter in everyday life.

PTE scores are mainly accepted in countries like Australia, USA, UK, Ireland, Singapore, Canada and New Zealand. PTE scores are accepted in these countries to gain admission in universities and for immigration purposes. PTE scores are also accepted in Australia and New Zealand to obtain permanent residence.

Is PTE tougher than IELTS?

The short answer to this question is NO. The difficulty of IELTS compared to PTE is the same. Neither test is easier than the other. They are both demanding and require fundamental skill building as well as knowledge of the test format.
